*Updated June 10, 2022*

The General Services Administration (GSA) has issued an update to the 2022 per diem rates and GSA mileage rates for the remainder of 2022. The update will take place on July 1 and the new 2022 business GSA mileage rate is 62.5 cents per mile, up 4 cents from the rate for the original 2022 mileage rate, which was 58.5 cents per mile.

What is the Current 2022 Federal Mileage Reimbursement Rate?

Here are the 2022 current government mileage rates as of July 1, 2022:

  • 62.5 cents per mile for business use
  • 22 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes for qualified active duty members of the Armed Forces, up 4 cents from the original rate for January-June of 2022
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations, which is set by statute and remains unchanged from 2021 and the first half of 2022.

The standard mileage rate for business use is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs: IRS Mileage Rates 2022.

GSA per diem rates 2022

For the 2022 GSA per diem rates, the rates increased from the 2021 GSA per diem rates:

  • $155 in the lower 48 states for regular (non high-cost) localities ($96 lodging, $59 M&IE)
  • A full list of all cities and per diems is located here.

However, you might now be wondering, what’s the difference between a low-cost and a high-cost city?

That’s determined by the GSA. They make changes yearly based on historical data. That means that where you travel will determine your per diem. Some cities cost less to travel to and stay in than others. This per diem is meant to cover expenses for lodging and meals for federal travelers.

According to the GSA “FY 2022 Per Diem Highlights,” most of the continental U.S. is covered by the standard CONUS per diem rate.

In 2022, there are 319 Non-Standard Areas (NSAs) that have per diem rates higher than the standard CONUS rate.

You can see which cities remain on the non-standard list here.

Helpful Per Diem Guidelines to Remember:

As a reminder, here are some per diem guidelines you should remember for 2022:

  • Keep track of your expenses so that you can be reimbursed for the cost of meals, gas, lodging, and other traveling expenses.
  • For lodging, get an itemized receipt of the hotel stay.
  • Per diem does not cover personal expenses or entertainment such as in-room charges.
  • Lodging on Federal per diem rates do not include taxes and can be reimbursed separately

If you’re planning a trip, be sure to look up which cities are still on the list for NSAs (Non-Standard Areas). Then, make adjustments as necessary to your per diem calculations. It’s a smart idea to be prepared.
